Hellboy is a 2004 American superhero film[7][8] based on the Dark Horse Comics character, created by Mike Mignola. Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, it is the first live-action film in the Hellboy franchise. Ron Perlman stars as the titular character, alongside Selma BlairJeffrey TamborKarel RodenRupert Evans, and John Hurt. The film draws inspiration from the debut comic Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. In the film, a charismatic demon-turned-investigator named "Hellboy" works with the secretive Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense to suppress paranormal threats, when a resurrected sorcerer seeks to make Hellboy fulfill his destiny by triggering the apocalypse.

In 1944, off the coast of Scotland, the Nazis build a machine to open a portal to space. With the help of the Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin, they intend to release the Ogdru Jahad — monstrous entities imprisoned in this other dimension — to help them defeat the Allies of World War II. Rasputin opens the portal with the help of his disciples, Ilsa von Haupstein and Karl Ruprecht Kroenen (en), a member of the Thule Society and an assassin in the service of Adolf Hitler. An Allied team is sent to destroy the portal, guided by a young scientist, Trevor Bruttenholm, who is well-versed in occultism. The German team is killed and the portal is destroyed — absorbing Rasputin — while Haupstein and Kroenen escape. Soon after, the Allied team discovers that a small demon with a stone right hand has come through the portal; they name him Hellboy and Bruttenholm adopts him.

Sixty years later, FBI agent John Myers is transferred to the BPRD (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense) at Bruttenholm's request. The young agent meets adult Hellboy and a telepathic amphibious humanoid named Abe Sapien. He learns that a third BPRD member, Liz Sherman, was recently hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital to protect others from her unstable pyrokinetic abilities. Despite Hellboy's regular visits and encouragement, she is determined not to return to the BPRD.
